Motorcycle repair is not exactly my strong suit. My job is quite the opposite. That said, this little 250 shows promise and we’d like to get it running.
Problem is, I don’t really know how these old bikes work. As far as I can tell, the spark plug is getting about 15v when I kick the starter over. That seems low. Is it a bad coil that’s not transforming as it should? Any help would be appreciated.

I’m using a known-good spark plug from one of the running bikes, so I don’t think it’s that. Of course, it’s from the running-but-floods-itself-still GS450 so the plug is pretty nasty. May try with a clean shiny plug from the never-did-get-it-running-because-the-harness-was-melted XJ550, though.
(Forgive the burner. Can’t easily log on from work computer and kinja mobile is the devil.)

If you points are set improperly, you’ll get a weak spark because of insufficient dwell. So, the coil doesn’t charge, weak spark. Also, does this thing have a battery? I don’t think it does, but I could be wrong. If not, check the wiring from the stator/mag coil to the ignition coil.

The wiring is cobbled together out of several lengths of wire and secured with tape. There is voltage coming through all the way to the sparkplug, so I’m fairly sure it isn’t broken anywhere.
Points are completely outside of my knowledge base. I can’t even get the cover off to look at them because I don’t know how to keep it from spinning so I can get the nut loose.

Were not sure. The vin isn’t specific and the sticker on the steering head has been painted over. Somewhere in the 70's Yamaha dt250

And it does look really fun. I'm sad we can't get it working.

I am getting very jealous of you. At least you keep posting how you can’t quite get these cool bikes to run; it keeps me from turning into a complete green jealousy monster.

If it makes you feel better, the 3rd rule of motorcycle salvage club is don’t love dem hoes. Even the nicer bikes we get are going to be parted out.

I use to ride one of these offroad in like 1977 and it was old then. It is a tank and weights a ton! And if you do get it to fire wear heavy sole boots kick starting that bitch, it kicks back.
I totaled mine crashing into a tree, broke my collar bore and split 2 teeth. Bent the front forks all the way under the motor I hit so hard.
